In general, Yixing clay teapots are unglazed, and newly crafted ones often carry the natural scent of the purple clay and the earth itself, making them unsuitable for immediate tea brewing as it can affect the taste. The process known as ‘opening’ a Yixing clay teapot in China involves cleaning a new teapot to eliminate or reduce the inherent scent of the purple clay pot, making it more suitable for use in brewing tea.
Cleaning Process for a New Yixing Clay Teapot:
Step 1: Unboxing and Inspection
Upon receiving a new Yixing clay teapot, open the box and check for any cracks, damages, or noticeable flaws.
Step 2: Initial Cleaning
If the inspection reveals no issues, clean the interior and exterior of the teapot with water and then dry it with a towel.
Step 3: Professional Cleaning
- Close the lid of the teapot and pour hot water around the exterior for preheating.
- Open the lid, fill the teapot with boiling water, close the lid, and then pour hot water around the exterior. Wait for approximately 3 minutes, then discard the water.
- Add an appropriate amount of tea leaves, such as black or pu-erh tea. Fill the teapot with hot water, close the lid, and pour hot water around the exterior. Wait for 1-2 hours. Discard the tea leaves and water, then clean the teapot inside and out.
Step 4: Drying
After completing the above steps, place the teapot in a well-ventilated area, open the lid, and let it air dry.
